The predecessors of Beijing College of Economics are Beijing Labor Leadership School, established in 1956, and the Beijing Experiment Worker Vocational School, which was originally the Shenyang 211 Vocational School of the Second Machinery Division based in Liaoning Province. With the approval of the Ministry of Labor, the two schools joined hands to become Beijing Labor College, yet which stopped operating in 1962. In February 1963, Beijing Engineering Economics College was founded on the basis of Beijing Labor College at the approval of State Council and it changed its name into Beijing College of Economics on June 7th. The school shut down during the Culture Revolution and was re-established on April 22nd, 1974. In 1986, it was enlisted as a municipal key university. The Beijing Institute of Finance and Economics was originated from the Beijing Finance and Trade Leadership School, which was the combination of Beijing Business Leadership School, Beijing Business Employee School, Beijing Food Leadership School, Beijing Supply and Marketing Leadership School, Beijing Service Bureau Employee Training Program and Beijing Bank Training Program.
On March 15th, Beijing People Committee issued permission to set up the Beijing Finance and Trade Technical Secondary School. In August 1962, the school began to operate independently but shut down during the Culture Revolution.In 1975, Beijing Party Committee approved to establish the Beijing Finance and Trade School, which changed its name into Beijing Finance and Economics School in 1973 and into Beijing Finance andTradeSchoolin 1975.
The school was upgraded into a university according to Notification on Approval of Re-establishing and Opening a Batch of Universitiesby the Ministry of Education on December 28th, 1978.
