A Discipline Development Overview
In 1955, China’s first labor economics major was created at the Capital University for Economics and Business. The first and second groups of students admitted to the program were greeted by twice my Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping in January and July of 1957. In 1958 the program started to admit undergraduate students, and MA students in 1978. In 1981 the program was accredited nationally to issue MA degrees, and in 2000 it was the second program accredited nationally to issue PhD degrees, in 2002 it was name one of Beijing’s key academic programs, in 2007 it was named a key national academic program, and in 2008 it was named one of Beijing excellent academic programs. For many years, the undergraduate program has been rank 2nd nationally among other academic programs of the same category by several social organizations’ university rankings. In the 2008-2009 annual appraisal, the Human Resources department which was derived from the Labor Economics department was ranked 2nd nationally among 197 similar university majors, the labor and social security major was ranked 11th among 99 universities. Since approval as a key national academic program in 2007, the undergraduate program has made a number of important achievements. Labor economics was named a national unique key program; the labor and social security major and labor economics major wer named national unique majors; “labor economics research” and “social security research” were named national elite curriculum, and the human resources management curriculum group teaching team was named national excellent teaching team.

B Faculty and Students
Over the past few decades, this academic program has been at the forefront of national academic development, both last generations founders and the current leaders of the program are well respected and influential academically. The considerable abilities of instructing and researching teams have 5 PhD advisers and 14 professors, 78% of whom have PhD degrees .There are 12 professors with overseas PhD degrees or MA degrees. The program also emphasizes strengthening academic communication and coordination with domestic programs, hiring Professor Xiao Zhuoji and other expert scholars, with more than 40 community leaders serving as guest and part time professors.
For more than 50 years, the labor economics program has trained many leaders. More than seven graduates have attained vice-ministerial level rank, 120 have achieved division and bureau level rank, more than 30 professors and 30 PhDs.

C Discipline Development Overview
The main research directions of the program are labor markets, income distribution, social security for workers, developing labor resources, labor relations, as well as population and labor. Its main characteristics are combining employment, wages and income distribution together, and from multiple perspectives opening theoretical explorations and research from the perspectives of macroeconomic and micro economic policy and institutions. It covers the development of human resources and utilizes micro and macro levels, primarily using an economics perspective to incorporate management and psychology perspectives, emphasizing the balance and communication between academic and practical schools, as well as combining theoretical foundations and practice, it it takes labor economics related research as the research object for worker social security. The demographics and labor research direction is a special area of the program. Labor relations research is another special research area.

D Projects, Funds, and Laboratories
In these research areas, this academic program has achieved impressive research results. Since July 2005, the discipline staff have presided over 2 key topics for National Social Science Fund and the 8 National Social Science Fund projects, more than 10 provincial projects, 8 international cooperation projects, 2 under the jurisdiction of the Beijing Municipality university innovation team project, and 2 Beijing Municipal top-level innovative talents projects. Scientific research achievements at the provincial and ministerial levels include 5 level 1 prizes, 2 level 9 prizes, and 3 level 11 prizes. Teaching achievements include at the provincial and ministerial level 1 level 1 prize , and one level two prize. Professor Yang Heqing’s "labor economics", "human resources management" courses, and professor Wen Kui’s "labor relations" curriculum have been rated excellent courses in Beijing city. Professor Yang Heqing's "labor economics", "career planning" have been name named Beijing quality materials, and selection selected as 11 Five-Year Plan national planning materials; Professor Zhang Qi, Professor Wang Jing are the editors for Social Security, and Labor and Social Security Statistics which were selected a 11th Five-Year Plan national planning materials.

E Future Plans and Construction Aims
The main tasks and development goals of this program are: work to achieve the world’s most advanced level, referencing the most advanced international level in related fields, constantly explore and innovate, update the subject content,while working to create international competitiveness. Take effective measures to cultivate high quality talents, continuously improve the quality of personnel training according to academic development and social needs, constantly adjust the curriculum and teaching plan, expand the knowledge field, increase the depth of knowledge, focus on teachers, teaching materials and laboratories, and further develop the discipline advantages, greatly improve teaching and scientific research level, deepen and expand the research field, pay attention to international standards, cultivate first-class scholars and high quality students.
