Western Economics is one of the first few disciplines that were established in the Capital University of Economics and Business. Many scholars who engaged in the studies of Western Economics such as the famous economists Professor GaoHongye and Professor Ding Bing all once worked at CUEB. Not only did they play an important rolein the academic community and have a comprehensive influence, they also trained many scholars in the researching and teaching Western Economics.

A Discipline Development Overview

B Faculty and StudentsThe discipline of Western Economics began to enroll undergraduates from 1974, and master’s degree students from 2001. During the new millennium, this discipline has made significant progress under the leadership of Professor Zhang Liancheng and Professor Wang Jun. In 2004, Western Economics was named anBeijing Excellent Course, and later in 2005it was also named a Beijing Brand Construction Major. In 2007, the Major of Economics including Western Economics was approved to be one of the first state level Special Construction majors by the Ministry of Education. In 2008, the teaching team of the core coursesof Economics, including western economics, was awarded the excellent teaching team of Beijing, again in 2010 it was again approved by the Ministry of Education to be the state-level teaching group. In 2009, the discipline of western economics was approved to be Beijing Key Construction Discipline. With the approval of the Ministry of Education and Beijing, this discipline established a state-level Economics international talent training base and an international Economics innovation talent training base of Beijing in 2009.Later in 2012, the major of Economics was selected to be a state-level reform unit of higher education.

C Discipline Development Overview
The discipline of western economics has benefited from the idea of opening-up education by the School of Economics, and thus formed its own features and advantages. During the past decade, this discipline has cooperated and conducted economic theory researches with some research institutes like Institute of Economics Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, etc. and signed some agreements with China CITIC Bank, etc. to co-establish social practice bases for the students. Until now, it has established various kinds of cooperation with more than 10 universities overseas.In the past few years, over ten graduates and postgraduates have been sent overseas annually for exchange free of charge, and several graduates have been selected to study for dual degree at home and abroad. Over ten graduates have been recommended for admission to University of Illinois and UniversitéToulouse 1 Capitole for Master degree.

D Projects, Funds, and Laboratories
After over 40 years of teaching staff construction, this discipline now has a highly experienced and qualified teaching team with strong capability in research.The structure of the teachers’ graduation school, age and education background has been continuously improved and upgraded. At present5 state level key projects, ordinary projects and Youth projects, and more than 20 provincial and ministerial-levelprojects are being conducted. During the past few years, the teaching staff of this discipline has published more than 20 monographs, textbooks, and over 100 papers in many core and authoritative journals. They have won 4 provincial and ministerial-level academic awards, and two groups have won the title of Beijing Academic Innovation Team.

E Future Plans and Construction AimsTogether with those teaching and research fruits, this discipline has also trained nearly 130 master degree graduates, many of whom have become leading figures and core members of many government agencies, enterprises and public institutions.
In recent years, the discipline of western economics stays close to the theoretical frontiers and the developments, and constantly adjusts and optimizes its research orientations, which embodies the academic characteristics and forefront-orientated features of this discipline. Now there are 4 research orientations, i.e. economic growth theories and macroeconomic policies, economic cycle theories and macroeconomic regulation and control, financial development and government regulation, low carbon economy and environmental economics. The academic research of these four orientations have all reached a high level, and have formed prominent features and obvious advantages in several fields like economic growth theories, economic cycle theories and environmental economics.
