Since its founding in 2000, the Social Security Program has earned a good reputation for itshighly qualified teaching staff, high quality instruction and research. In 2008, this discipline was approved as of the Key Disciplines of Beijing. The construction of his discipline is conducted by the School of Labor Economics of the Capital University of Economics and Business. Through close cooperation with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China, partner universities and scientific research institutes overseas, this discipline has made great progress in many respects, such as team building, scientific research, talent cultivation, and academic exchanges at home and abroad.

Professor Lu Xuejing, the academic leader of this discipline, has long been working on the teaching and research in social security, and holds important positions in some national academic societies. There is a highly qualified teaching and research team, including 7 professors, among them 2 doctoral supervisors; 2 associate professors and 3 lecturers.There is a good balance between young and old professors, and they support each other in their teaching and research responsibilities. This discipline focuses not onlyon national issues, butalso on making a contribution to the social and economic development of Beijing. More than 200 of the program’s graduates who earned either a master’s degree or a Ph.D. degreeare now leaders or work in government offices, businesses and public institutionsin the field of social security.

As market based reforms intensify,the importance of the social security system and this academic discipline increases. This discipline undertakes social security research with laborsecurity protections as its main focus.Crossover with various other research fields concerning laborsecurity protection and labor economy isemphasized. Academically speaking, the basic research of the program is equal to them applied research. The research of this discipline touches upon many other subjects like economics, management, demographics, law, finance and etc., it also references the knowledge and research produced by these subjects. However, this discipline maintains its own distinct research direction and methodologies.

The outstanding academic leaders and teachers of this discipline have undertaken dozens of projects supported by state-level, provincial and ministeriallevel grants, and many other consulting projects which have laid a solid foundation for the development of this discipline. From 2010 to 2015, more than 100 papers have been published in core journals at home and abroad, such as Social Security Studies, China Journal of Social Work, etc., and many monographs and other research has been published, including A Comparative Study of Social Welfare Systems for the Disabled in Typical Countries, Theory and Empirical Research of ChinesePeasant Laborers’ Social Security, etc., exemplifying the impressive research capabilities of the discipline.
