General Introduction  

The Foreign Language Department FLDof Capital University of Economics and Business was founded in 2003, whose predecessor was the Teaching and Research Section of English, which set up on the basis of the former Foreign Language Teaching Department in 2001. Currently, FLD consists of four Teaching and Research Sections the Teaching and Research Section for English Majors, the Teaching and Research Section for Non-English majors, the Teaching and Research Section for Postgraduates and the Teaching and Research Section for Minor Languages. There are also three Academic Research Institutions in the department, namely, the Centre for English Language and Literature, the Centre for Inter-Cultural Studies and the Centre for Translation Studies. FLD has set up one Language Laboratory (with 18 separated language learning and teaching rooms, including Simultaneous Interpretation Lab, Digitalized Learning Centre, Audio and Video Editing and Transmission Lab, Multi-modal Scene Lab). At present, FLD has over 400 undergraduates and 6 postgraduates. Bedsides, the department has been shouldering the responsibility of English courses for non-English majors at all academic levels in Capital University of Economics and Business (CUEB).

Nowadays, when cultivating the internationalized talents has been the strategic target, FLD is going to make efforts from three aspects. The first endeavor is to put into practice the notion of benefiting the teaching and the taught alike and concept of integrating production, study and research, aiming at promoting the levels of foreign languages and training the qualified builders of socialist cause. The second endeavor is to design the internationalization window through the joint efforts of both teachers and students. The third one is to create the strong and deep atmosphere of learning foreign languages on the campus.

Bachelor’s Program

On the approval by Ministry of Education, FLD offers two Bachelor’s programs: Business English and Business English Translation. Since the foundation of the department, FLD has been adhering to the student-orientated principle in striving for its further development and adopting the internationalized model in the cultivation of students’ comprehensive qualities with multiple approaches. It has been making full use of excellent teaching resources and advanced teaching equipments and relying on the advantages of the disciplines of economics and management so as to foster the students’ good command of English language, on the basis of which great importance has been attached on the mastery of knowledge in the fields of economics and management as well as the cultivation of practical ability. Until now, FLD has trained for the society over 500 qualified talents of business English, who are characterized with international vision and of Inter-disciplinary type as well as applied type. The above facts have fully justified the importance of the necessity and importance of the discipline of foreign language and literature in universities of finance and economics. The total enhancement of the integrated power of teaching and research has been playing a very important part in the rapid development of CUEB.

Disciplinary Construction

FLD has Master’s program of the first-class discipline in the field of Foreign Language and Literature. There are two second-class disciplines, namely, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Liguistics, English Language and Literature. Four research directions for M. A degree have been established as follows, Business English, Cross-cultrual Communication, Theory and Practice of Translation and Anglo-American Literature. As one of the earliest leading forces in the research field of Nature Writing, FLD has introduced into our country the marrow of the Anglo-American scholarship in this field and helped to widely disseminate the notion of the harmony between man and nature. A team of outstanding teaching and research staffs, headed by Professor Cheng Hong, have been engaged in teaching and doing research in a down-to-earth manner and have been tracking down closely the frontier issues in the international academic circle, achieving substantial results. The book Return to the Wildness by Professor Cheng Hong, being the ever first book systematically introducing Nature Writing and criticism, has done great contributions to the research of Anglo-American Nature Writing in our country.


At present, FLD has a staff team of 61 members, of whom 55 are regular professional teachers, 11 hold doctoral degrees, 19 are associate professors, and 4 are professors. Many of them graduated from key universities home and abroad. Besides, FLD also recruits qualified scholars and teachers from overseas to teach in various courses. Until now, there are in FLD seven teachers who have been elected as “Backbone Youth Teachers of Beijing City” and five “Excellent Host Lecturers of CUEB.”

Educational Reform

For more than ten years, abiding by the conception of “teaching students in accordance with their own aptitude,” FLD has made outstanding contributions to English teaching and research. Early in 1998, FLD has adopted a multi-level teaching method in real practice. The Ministry of Education granted the department as one of the selected units for experiments in the reform of English teaching in 2004. In the education of English majors, FLD has introduced internationalized personnel training pattern and has carried out bold reformation and exploration in course appraisal pattern and second class construction, with the harvests being highly impressive. Nature Writing Textbook has elected Excellent Textbook of Beijing City. Quite a few other textbooks have been elected as Excellent Textbooks of CUEB, such as Inter-cultural Business Communication, Multiple Reading Tutorial for College English Teaching, Economics and Trade Translation Tutorial.

Two courses, namely, College English and Comprehensive English hold the awards as Selected Course at university level. FLD has over forty approved Education Reform Projects and four Teaching Achievement Awards, all of which are at university level.

Academic Research

The department has made significant achievements in the field of academic research in recent years. At present, the faculty has been undertaking two projects funded by the National Funds of Social Sciences, two projects by the Ministry of Education, three at municipal government level and six at university level. The faculty has put out dozens of research works, textbooks, and translation works. Over one hundred papers were published in authoritative and core journals and over one thousand in average ones.

International Exchanges & Cooperation 

Every year, the department selects and sends young teachers to the countries like England and America, where English is spoken as the mother tongue for academic-cultural exchanges. FLD has successfully established co-operative projects with many universities in America. Each year, twenty students will be sent abroad to participate for one-year projects in some American universities, such as Dickinson State University, Northern State University, University of California, Riverside Branch of University of California and Park University.

Campus Life 

Edified both by Oriental culture and foreign culture, the students of FLD, are open-minded and endowed with broad vision as well as profound cultural heritage. The students have won many awards through fierce competitions, such as Beijing College Students’ Speech Contest, "CCTV"CUP English Speaking Contest and “FLTRP” CUP National English Debating Competition, etc.

Full of creativity and enterprising spirits, the students start many associations and clubs, like English Salon, Multi-language Club, Students’ Union of the Department, Sub-group of Volunteers and Editorial Department of Seeing the World, have organized many activities beneficial to the students to colorize their campus life and strengthen the English-learning atmosphere in university, playing a role that can not be ignored in the learning of English in CUEB.
