CUEB Negotiation Team Wins Silver Medal in The Negotiation Challenge Finals
On April 10, TNC (The Negotiation Challenge) Finals drew to a successful end. "The Waves" team from CUEB, composed of Hu Ruifang and Yan Shang, students of Grade 2017, from the College of Business Administration, and Xue Jun, student of Grade 2018, from the School of Accounting, won the 2nd prize in the world.
Since CUEB has won the 3rd prize in the 2018 TNC Competition held in San Francisco, the organizer preferred CUEB to host the competition in 2021. Due to the COVID-19, the whole competition was conducted online. Team members from CUEB competed with 42 teams from top universities in the world, including Harvard Law School, University of California, Berkeley, School of Law and Queensland University of Technology. "The Waves" advanced to the finals in the fierce competition of 42 to 12 and won the silver medal with a total of 106 points (second only to the champion, Nagoya University of Commerce & Business, with 2 points, but ahead of the 3rd, UC Hasting Law, with 8 points).
Led by Li Yan and Wang Ziwei, teachers from the College of Business Administration, CUEB team conducted a wonderful international simulated business negotiation.
The competition consisted of the online qualification round and the final event. Firstly, there were three qualification rounds of "results-oriented", which were scheduled on the weekends of the first three weeks in March. 42 teams competed online at the same time. Each round had 48 hours of negotiation, and the negotiation results should be submitted within the specified time. As CUEB is the host of the competition, the first round of cases was inspired by the historical allusion of Zhang Qian, a Chinese envoy to the Western Regions. The two sides took the Silk Road as the background to discuss business exchanges and long-term cooperation. The third round was closely linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, with negotiations involving the purchase and distribution of vaccines. The top 11 teams in the first three rounds were qualified to the final event. CUEB team was qualified as the 3rd prize winner.
The remaining part of the competition consisted of two rounds of "process-oriented", which were divided into three parts: negotiation result, referee's evaluation of the process and opponent's impression score. In the fourth round of the competition, CUEB team interpreted the English cases within an hour, quickly grasped the content and the method, entered the negotiation, and finally won the 2nd prize in this round. In the last round of negotiations, in view of the new negotiation system and topics adopted in the competition, CUEB team bravely thought outside the box, took the standpoint of other countries into consideration, and advanced the negotiation in an orderly manner in the face of new and challenging topics. In the end, CUEB team obtained high praise from referees and opponents and won the 2nd prize.
During the competition, CUEB team always adhered to the concept of "win-win cooperation" and communicated with the opponents in a friendly and equal manner. Finally, our team got the highest score among the 42 teams in the cumulative score of relationship, and won the silver medal as well as the "Best Relationship Maintenance Award".
Since its establishment, CUEB Negotiation Team (INT) has always attached great importance to the cultivation of Chinese-English bilingual negotiation competences, and actively exchanges experience of business negotiation with teams from other countries, so as to learn from one other and make progress together. During the TNC competition, CUEB team actively communicated with candidates from France, Italy, the United States, Germany and other countries, to conduct cultural exchanges and establish friendship.
