CUEB Fully Implements Fundamental Tasks of Fostering Virtues to Develop First-class Undergraduate Education in the New Era
On October 21st, CUEB held the 6th Undergraduate Teaching Conference with the theme “Fully Implement the Fundamental Task of Fostering Virtues to Create a First-class Undergraduate Education in the New Era”. Han Xianzhou, Party Secretary of CUEB; Fu Zhifeng, President of CUEB; Xu Fang and Wu Hui, Deputy Party Secretaries of CUEB; Ding Lihong, Sun Haozhe and Wang Yonggui, Vice Presidents of CUEB, as well as Xing Qi, a member of the Party Standing Committee and Director of the United Front Work Division, attended the conference. The Vice President Wang Chuansheng presided over the meeting.
The conference kicked off with the solemn singing of the national anthem.
Fu Zhifeng made a keynote report. He reviewed the undergraduate education and teaching of CUEB in the past three years from six aspects. First, CUEB has always adhered to the leadership of the Communist Party of China and fully implemented the fundamental task of fostering virtues. The system and mechanism of “Three Aspects Education”, namely, the integrity of all staff, the whole process and all-around education was gradually improved with rapid development of ideological and political course construction. Second, CUEB has focused on connotative development that has helped in the construction of first-class undergraduates who have embarked on the fast track to success. The university has successfully completed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching aligning with optimizing the undergraduate professional structure and comprehensively improving education levels of teacher teams. Third, CUEB has strengthened the educational process management. The reform of the talent training model reached a new level through the following efforts: providing solid foundations for talent training in five aspects; developing a higher-quality and more intelligent classroom introduction as well as an application-oriented and industry-building practical teaching; adhering to an output-oriented student development with an international perspective. Fourth, CUEB has created an innovative atmosphere by writing a new chapter in education and teaching reform. Optimization and innovation were injected into the teaching system, accompanied with solid teaching construction and comprehensive reform projects, with the focus on high-level teaching achievement awards. Fifth, CUEB has stabilized teaching operations and successfully completed undergraduate teaching tasks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sixth, CUEB has adapted to the reform of the enrollment system, continuously improving the quality of enrollment.
Fu Zhifeng pointed out that in the next three years, we need to gather common consciousness, fulfill our responsibility, and strengthen the regulation of undergraduate teaching at CUEB. For implementing the fundamental tasks of fostering virtues, we need to promote ideological and political course construction in all aspects, deepen the reform of large-scale training, as well as strengthen the construction of first-class majors and courses. Meanwhile, we need to improve the reform of the teaching model, and strengthen standard teaching management. Besides, with the new spirit of assessment and review, we need to implement teaching evaluation reform, encourage research of teaching reform, and build a smart teaching environment. Fu Zhifeng said that undergraduate education and its quality of training talents are essential to our university. Therefore, with taking undergraduate education as a basis, we need to further improve the scientific research and discipline construction, promote high-quality and connotative development in undergraduate education and teaching, so as to make greater achievements in the fifth discipline evaluation.
Han Xianzhou expressed his praise to CUEB’s achievements in the past three years, and congratulated representatives winning awards in the conference. He said excitedly that “the Roll of Laureates” epitomes the constant development of CUEB, and he hoped the roll can continue to grow. Han Xianzhou put forward the idea that we need to learn about the background of undergraduate education in the new era, to place priority on fostering builders of socialism from generation to generation, as well as to implement the fundamental tasks of fostering virtues throughout education.
Han Xianzhou said that as a new idea, ideological and political course construction poses new requirements and new tasks for talents educating in the new era. Initial results have been achieved in the past year, and we need to meet the four requirements for further development. First, instead of just learning ideological and political courses in concept, we need to combine it with fulfilling the fundamental tasks of fostering virtues, building a high-level talent training system, and completing the system and mechanism of “Three Aspects Education” in the new era, which deepens our understanding about ideological and political courses. Second, Our university and every school need to make an overall plan for ideological and political construction according to different majors and their requirements. Third, we cannot talk about the ideological and political course in the abstract. We need to know the system and content of the course, and use plain words to explain it. Fourth, we cannot forget our initial inspiration of ideological and political course construction, and try to follow the way of education to foster students in a natural way. In the future, CUEB will continue to implement the fundamental tasks of fostering virtues, further improve the ideological and political course construction step by step, and thoroughly fulfill the undergraduate education plan released at this conference. We will bolster our confidence, build consensus, and provide direction to developing first-class undergraduate education in the new era.
In the awards section, Wang Chuansheng declared the award list, including first-class major construction points, the Teaching Quality Awards, and Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Administrator.
Han Xianzhou and Fu Zhifeng honored the 2019 and 2020 National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Points and Beijing First-class Undergraduate major Construction points respectively.
Xu Fang and Wu Hui presented the awards to the winners of the second Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award.
Ding Lihong and Sun Haozhe awarded winners of the second Undergraduate Teaching Rookie Award.
Wang Yonggui and Xing Qi presented prizes to winners of Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Administrators.
Wang Jun, the representative from the national first-class major construction base and dean of the School of Economy, CUEB, shared the experience and prospects of building the national first-class major, including summarizing connotation of the major, ideological and political major construction, curriculum and teaching systems, talent training model, as well as the new mechanism of coordinated education. He said the School of Economy has achieved full coverage of national first-class majors. By following the idea of ‘point to area, step by step, continuous summary, and comprehensive improvement’, this School has implemented the fundamental tasks of fostering virtues and promoting the ideological and political major construction in all respects namely, improve the system of curriculum and teaching with political economics as the core, take the new arts construction as a great opportunity to improve majors, develop highly innovative models for training talents with the experimental class as a breakthrough, develop a new mechanism of coordinated education directed for the application ability. In the future, our college will continue to follow the correct theory, strengthen the connotative development of majors, and make greater achievements in the construction of majors.
Zhang Chunping, the winner of the second Teaching Excellence Award from the School of Public Finance and Taxation of CUEB, shared his experience about teaching, including teacher’s moral cultivation, class design, and professional quality. He said teaching is a kind of spiritual vocation, and teachers are engineers of human souls. Class teaching is like a show, and teachers need to write, direct, and act well by themselves. Furthermore, teachers need to make sure the content of classes includes their own unique ideas, and prepare for the class carefully. Besides, teachers need to respect their occupation, and pay attention to their own image in classes. The occupation requires continued self-completion and self-improvement, and teachers need to set an example of their professional area and life for students. At the same time, they also need to care for students and help them to establish goals in their study and life.
Our university will comprehensively implement Guiding Outline of Ideological and Political Construction of College Courses and the fundamental tasks of fostering virtues. Meanwhile, we will promote overall reform of “Three Aspects Education”, deepen the ideological and political course construction, as well as improve the ability and level of constructing the ideological and political course, increasing its effect on education and in building a high-level training system. Therefore, our university decided to establish a center which will focus on research of curriculum theory and teaching practice, use its functions to serve, organize, research, consult and direct, and play roles in demonstrating and leading, making CUEB’s ideological and political construction move forward.
Under the five-second countdown and the attention of the attenders, Han Xianzhou and Fu Zhifeng jointly inaugurated the Ideological and Political Course Teaching Research Center of CUEB.
We will earnestly implement national conference on undergraduate education in colleges and universities in the new era and Opinions on Deepening the Reform of Undergraduate Education and Improving the Quality of Personnel Training. What’s more, we will accelerate development to establish the Beijing municipal high-level research university and “domestically first-class and internationally renowned” university of finance and economics. Besides, we will create a first-class undergraduate education system, and comprehensively improve the guaranteed capacity and level of first-class undergraduate education construction. This time, the conference issued the Implementation Plan of Capital University of Economics and Business to Comprehensively Implement the Fundamental Tasks of Fostering Virtues and Build a First-class Undergraduate Education in the New Era ("20 Rules of Undergraduate education in CUEB" for short).
"20 Rules of Undergraduate education in CUEB" guides the reform of education and teaching of our university with 20 aspects, including guiding ideology, construction goal, construction principle, ideological and political course construction, major construction, course construction, textbook systems, teaching models, training systems, the educational reform research, teaching practical, competition and scientific innovation, teaching team development, teaching evaluation, teaching management, teaching service, evaluation mechanism, smart environment, quality evaluation, organization and implementation.
Present at the conference were leaders of departments, the representatives of awarding groups, as well as leading groups from different colleges, representatives of teachers and students, and all teaching administrators.
