From Feb. 18th to 22nd, CUEB launched Level I intensive training for EMI (English as Medium of Instruction), a program aimed at improving the teaching capacity of faculties who lecture in English. The 5-day training was co-organized by Personnel Office and Culture and Education Section of the British Embassy. Altogether 19 teachers from 11 schools attended this training session.

To ensure an optimum effect of the customized training, the project team from Culture and Education Section of the British Embassy conducted a field study in CUEB. Related information was collected through panel sessions, researches and observations of on-site bilingual teaching.

During the training, Uwe Pohl, trainer from Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem in Hungary, discussed the questions collected. He also guided learners to conduct simulation and got into details on structuring English immersion lectures and group discussions, managing and guiding students with different characters, and how to provide effective feedback.

In the delivering of mini-lesson planning, the trainer divided the teachers from different majors and disciplines into seven groups, encouraging them to make presentations in groups with skills learnt. Giving full play to their talents, the trainees made excellent performances by practicing the acquired teaching methods in a creative way. All participants said that the intensive and informative training benefited them a lot.

As the first stage of the EMI program, the training is aimed to provide comprehensive teaching theories of EMI, through which teachers are better equipped to solve practical problems. At Level II, trainees are asked to apply knowledge into English immersion (bilingual) classroom, which is recorded on videos. Periodically receiving the videos, the trainers will provide online tutoring tailored for each class. Level III covers intensive training where feedback and development plans are provided, helping the teachers to be “bilingually qualified” soon.
