To inherit the spirit of outstanding teachers and to development CUEB, a new teacher education fund of CUEB was formally set up, following the Rixin Award Fund, Xiaohang Fund, and Dong Jiuchang Fund. On the afternoon of May 9, the launching ceremony of “Wenhui Education Fund of Law Major” was held in the 7th conference room on the 5th floor of Bona Building. Shen Wenhui, 90-year-old former Dean of the CUEB Economic Law Department, Han Xianzhou, Party Secretary of CUEB, Zhao Xiling, Director of Cooperation Affairs Office, Secretary-General of Alumni Association and Education Foundation, members of the Party and governance team of School of Law, representatives of previous alumni of School of Law, and representatives of teachers and students attended the ceremony. Sun Mingchun, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Law, presided over the ceremony.

The ceremony began with a short video, reviewing Prof. Shen Wenhui's decades of education career and the warm moments of getting along with his colleagues and students, which makes people fully appreciate the educating style of the elder generation as a jurist and an educator.

Later, Party Secretary Han Xianzhou delivered a speech. On behalf of CUEB Party Committee, he congratulated the foundation of “Wenhui Education Fund of Law Major” and expressed sincere gratitude to the alumni who are working in all walks of life and always caring about the Alma Mater. As a response to the appeal of some alumni, CUEB set up “Wenhui Education Fund of Law Major” not only because Prof. Shen has made outstanding contributions to the establishment of Economic Law Department and to the research on economic law, but also because he is a master respected by everyone. The spirit of this Fund is consistent with the general requirements of China's higher education to implement the fundamental task of fostering character and civic virtue through education. The year of 2021 marks the beginning of the “14th Five-Year Plan” for CUEB. Based on the initiation and establishment of the Fund, we hope to gather more alumni strength, deepen the comprehensive reform of education for overall students in all respects, and create good educational environment. In this way, more teachers and students will be inspired to inherit the spirit and responsibility of the older generation such as Prof. Shen, engaging in scholarship in accordance with Chinese realities, to make greater contributions to the construction of “four centers” (namely, Beijing as the National Political Center, Cultural Center, International Communication Center, and Science & Technology Innovation Center) and building of high-level research university.

Fu Zhifeng, President of CUEB, prepared a written speech for the launching ceremony, and Zhao Xiling read it on behalf of him. Fu Zhifeng noted that "Wenhui Education Fund of Law Major ", initiated by the alumni, is consistent with the value of other famous teacher education funds of CUEB. The aim is to show and inherit the spirit of outstanding senior teachers’ selfless dedication, create an atmosphere of wholehearted devotion to work and to foster character and civic virtue for a better growth of the university. He said that CUEB will live up to the entrust of alumni and the expectation of teachers and students, and unite with the alumni to build a more respectable CUEB.

Zhang Shijun, President of School of Law, introduced the development of the college in discipline construction, talent training, academic research, and international exchanges in recent years. He pointed out that the current achievements are closely related to the efforts made by the older generation of jurists represented by Prof. Shen. He said that School of Law will adhere to the motto: “Advocate morality, value competence, strategize national development, and serve the people” and be committed to graduating students that are well-rounded, suited to the contemporary needs of modern social development, innovative, effective with a wide breadth of knowledge, and have a mastery over both the theoretical and the practical sides of what they choose to study. It means that School of Law needs to shore up weaknesses and highlight its characteristics, as a way to further improve talent training, and make greater contributions to the rule of law in the capital and the country.

Party Secretary of School of Law, Mi Xinli shared her understanding of Prof. Shen’s concept on education. She said that when promoting the development of the discipline of law, Prof. Shen has made great efforts to give full play to CUEB's financial advantages and highlight the professional characteristics. In terms of talent cultivation, Prof. Shen focused on the cultivation of morality, and helped young teachers patiently and cared for them. She pointed out that under the proper leadership of CUEB Party Committee, the leading group of School of Law will take over the baton from the predecessors, actively foster character and civic virtue, and work together to make greater achievements in a new stage.

At the ceremony, Han Chao, representative sponsor of “Wenhui Education Fund of Law Major” and alumna of the economic law major of Grade 1985, related her deep teacher-student friendship with Prof. Shen and expressed her gratitude and reverence for Prof. Shen’s rigorous and meticulous ethics and manner. 

Huang Jianwen, another sponsor and alumna of the economic law major of Grade 1991, concluded Prof. Shen’s key contributions to the school development as one of the founders of the School of Law and hoped the Fund to sow its seed for the growth of every student. 

Representative Li Han, also alumna of the economic law major of Grade 1989, presented a bouquet to Prof. Shen. Besides, she detailed Prof. Shen’s brilliant lectures in retrospect and gave her thanks for his knowledge imparting and the long-lasting spirit nourishment. 

After receiving the flowers, Prof. Shen delivered a speech. He first extended his gratitude to CUEB and alumni for their care and then shared his teaching experience by explaining ideas and methods involved in the trial process based on two previous cases. Prof. Shen pointed out that Law is a theory but more a practice, and he believed that more head-scratching cases can be tackled by following the Civil Code along with its promulgation. When talking about the Fund, Prof. Shen expected this foundation to play a bigger role in discipline development of the School of Law, as well as in China’s construction of the rule of law. 

Then, Zhao Xiling introduced CUEB Education Foundation about its work principle, organization setup, fund management and other aspects and shared the origin and value of CUEB’s funds named after distinguished teachers. Except for expressing her thanks for alumni’s preparation and leaders of the School of Law’s support during the initiation, Zhao also hoped that the setup of the Fund can better integrate the power from alumni and the society, so as to better facilitate personnel training and the development of the School. 

Teachers of the School of Law who were unable to attend the ceremony sent congratulations and bouquets to Prof. Shen. Representatives of the Grade 1985 and 1986 also presented souvenirs on behalf of all attended alumni to convey their respect and blessing. 

During the communication session, present teachers and alumni exchanged and shared their opinions on the development of CUEB’s major of the economic law, Prof. Shen’s education principle among other topics. Attendees all agreed that, as one of the earliest scholars putting forward the integration of Law and Economics, Prof. Shen has been forward-looking in his education concept and has contributed a lot to discipline development of the School of Law. In future study and work, we will all bear Prof. Shen’ s teachings by heart, so as to carry forward his spirit of education.

After the ceremony, the alumni visited School History Museum to recall the sweet memory of teachers and classmates.
