Li Wangyue from the School of Statistics: Guardian Angel for Life as the 7th HSCs Donor in CUEB
On the morning of December 13th, Li Wangyue, an undergraduate student from the Data Science and Big Data Technology in the School of Statistics, donated Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and gave hope for life with warm love in this cold Beijing winter. Li Wangyue is the 12,434th HSCs donor in China, 470th in Beijing, 26th in Fengtai District, and the 7th in CUEB, the 2nd in the School of Statistics in CUEB.
In the afternoon, Wang Chuansheng, Vice President of CUEB went to visit Li Wangyue on behalf of the university at the designated recuperation site of the Red Cross Society of China Beijing Branch. Wang Xiaohong, Director of the University Hospital, Zhou Guangjun, Party Secretary of the School of Statistics, Chang Biao, Vice Party Secretary of the School of Statistics, and Chen Zixuan, the headteacher accompanied Wang Chuansheng on the visit. Wang Chuansheng conveyed cordial greetings from CUEB, asked in detail about Li Wangyue’s donation, and urged her to ensure she has a good rest and take care of her health. Wang Chuansheng said that Li Wang Yue brought hope for life to the little patient with her kindness and showed the spirit of CUEBers with her selfless love. On behalf of the faculty and students of the School of Statistics, Zhou Guangjun expressed his condolences to Li Wangyue. He said that Li Wangyue, a role model for her classmates, showed the glory of youth in the new era with her bravery and commitment, and practiced the responsibility and mission of a communist party member with her practical actions.
Li Wangyue, from Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, took the initiative to participate in three blood donations since she enrolled in university in 2018 and joined China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) during her first blood donation on October 31, 2019. Looking back, Li Wangyue said, “While waiting to donate blood, a video related to the HSCs donation was shown at the university. In the video, a student who had successfully donated the HSCs told us about her donation experience. I was very moved after hearing it and felt that it was meaningful to be able to save a person’s life, which also represents the responsibility and commitment of our contemporary youth.”
On May 8th, 2021, when Li Wangyue was notified of the successful match, she was so excited that she was speechless. She did not think that one day she would have the opportunity to save a life. Although her mind was blank at that moment, she did not hesitate to donate the HSCs. Li Wangyue had a High-resolution (HR) matching and final confirmation of the match result on June 9th, 2021. She passed the medical examination on September 16th, 2021 and was ready for the transplant to take place. On the morning of December 13th, 2021, she officially completed the HSCs donation.
In the view of her classmates, Li Wangyue is a genuine “triple-A” outstanding student in the new generation with ideals, skills and responsibilities. She has excellent academic performance and has been sent to the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics to pursue her master’s degree. At the same time, she works conscientiously and responsibly as a member of the commissary in charge of the class and as the former head of the study section of the student union she demonstrated a strong working ability. She actively participates in various activities, whether sports competitions or volunteer activities. In addition, she treats people warmly and treats everyone around her with a sincere heart. Under her seemingly fearless personality, she also has a tender and delicate inner world.
While the students around her expressed their admiration for Li Wangyue’s actions, she acted very calmly, “I think it's nothing. When I can save a child’s life, I feel that I must do what I can within my ability. It's not just me, but anyone else who was told that they could donate HSCs would have done so. I also sincerely wish this little boy a speedy recovery.”
Role models are all around us, and it is the selfless volunteers like Li Wangyue that give hope to more patients. The power of role models is infinite: we believe that in the future, more outstanding young people will join this cause and make greater contributions to society with selflessness.
