Youth League Committee Offers CPR and First-Aid Training to Volunteers for Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
On the afternoon of December 8th, the Youth League Committee and University Hospital jointly offered the CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and first-aid training to volunteers for Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. It aims to improve the comprehensive quality of volunteers, popularize medical knowledge, and strengthen the competence of first aid and self-help. Wang Xiaohong, President of University Hospital and Secretary General of the Red Cross, personally supervised this training. Tan Jie, associate senior doctor and Chairman of the Labor Union in University Hospital, and many medical workers gave lectures and practical simulations and demonstrations. Nearly 50 representatives of the volunteers from different fields participated in the training.

Tan Jie firstly described the symptoms of cardiac arrest and sudden death (which are common emergencies in daily life) and the principles of determining whether CPR is needed or not. Then, Tan focused on the basic principles and methods of CPR and introduced three core steps, namely Closed chest cardiac massage, airway opening, and artificial respiration. She also demonstrated the correct use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for students. In addition, Tan said that everyone can be a first aider. In volunteering for the Beijing 2022 Games, they must remember to raise safety awareness and always keep clam no matter what happens so that we can seize the golden four minutes (the most valuable rescue time for patients suffering cardiac arrest) and act correctly to save a life.

In the performance and exercise section, 8 teachers from the University Hospital used a manikin to show the specific steps of CPR. Then, they instructed students to practice while correcting their mistakes. Volunteers listened carefully, took notes, and practiced accordingly. This helped them to understand and learn the CPR skills better. At the same time, after watching and learning how to use AED, volunteers actively participated in the on-site simulation. The lifelike model, detailed introduction and valuable experience gave each one an intuitive and in-depth understanding of the complete procedure of first aid.
As an important part of volunteers’ training held by the Youth League Committee for Beijing 2022 Games, the CPR and first-aid training is expected to promote volunteers’ medical knowledge in all aspects of first aid and to build a voluntary team with comprehensive qualities, high-level services, and strong capabilities to serve the Beijing 2022 Games better.
