In the first period of the knockout on May 1, facing the strong opponent — Ocean University of China, our players hit their stride to propel CUEB men's basketball team through thick and thin, with double-digit lead in the first half. Finally, our players won the game at 96-75. But Deng Wenjie as a dominant center came up huge for the team, who had to quit this competition after a serious injury of his right wrist, making it more competitive for the subsequent competition.

On May 2, CUEB competed with Civil Aviation University of China, a powerful force in the second period of the knockout, who had maintained a winning streak and eclipsed Beijing Sport University. In spite of the loss of Den Wenjie, all players were in higher spirit in this competition, which matters most to a chance for the national competition.

Team CUEB was in a passive position merely in the first quarter with a ten-point gap, but later gained upper hand. The score was 30-35 at the end of the first half, with only five points lagging behind.

In the second half, CUEB players played their trump card--full-court press, resulting in competitors making mistakes in a row. As a result, they seized opportunities by fast attack and defense to narrow the gap in the third quarter with 9 points in the lead. In the fourth quarter, the team still had an upper hand by this strategy at the cost of substantial physical output. With four minutes left, however, the players ran out of energy, resulting in a decrease in the quality of defense and attack, and the score was only three points ahead. In this situation, the coach called a suspension in time, giving the players a chance to adjust their states. Subsequently, the team guided the ball into the bottom corner to secure three points, followed by two successful two-point shots, thus the scoring gap widened to ten points. When there were only two and a half minutes left at the end of the game, the mentality of the players changed, because their attack was blocked, the defense was fouled, and the gap gradually narrowed. With 50 seconds left, the score was tied 69-69, and the coach called a timeout. After a re-arrangement, the breakthrough of No.14 Yuan Zhaoyao drew two fouls and earned two free throws, one of which secured one point. With the last ten seconds left, the other side sent the ball straight into the basket but failed to score. The final score was 70-69.

With more than 10 years of great support from the university and all CUEBers, CUEB men's basketball team has established a new record to advance into the semi-finals. In the future, the team shall work hard for a better performance in the national competition!
