On September 15, the 2026 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) was officially released. CUEB achieved a major breakthrough in discipline development: Finance ranked among the global top 100 for the third consecutive year; Economics rose by 120 places to enter the global top 150; and Business Administration and Management newly made the list.

The number of CUEB’s disciplines included in the ranking increased to four, double that of 2025. Among them, Economics achieved a leapfrog, ranking in the top five among Chinese universities specialized in Finance and Economics on the list, which fully demonstrates the latest milestone achievements in the development of the university’s mainstay advantageous disciplines.

Looking toward the 15th Five-Year Plan period, guided by serving major national strategies and supporting the development of Beijing in the new era, CUEB will anchor its goals to the “Double First-Class” initiative. Taking discipline development as the lead, the university will strive to build four discipline clusters featuring prominent strengths, interdisciplinary synergy, and distinctive characteristics. It will continue to strengthen its mainstay advantageous disciplines, make forward-looking arrangements for emerging disciplines, and vigorously cultivate interdisciplinary disciplines, so as to build a new liberal arts system with finance and economics characteristics that is empowered by digital intelligence and integrates industry with education, thereby continuously enhancing its disciplinary strength and the quality of personnel cultivation.

ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) employs a series of internationally comparable objective academic indicators to measure the academic competitiveness of universities worldwide in specific disciplines. The 2026 ranking covers 57 subjects across five major fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. The ranking covers universities that have published a specified number of papers in a given subject during 2021– 2025, with different publication thresholds set for each subject. The bibliometric data are sourced from the Web of Science and InCites databases.

The ranking’s indicator system consists of five categories and nine indicators. The World-Class Faculty category comprises four indicators: winners of internationally prestigious awards, highly cited researchers, editors-in-chief of international academic journals, and leaders of international academic organizations. The World-Class Output category covers papers published in top journals and internationally prestigious awards. The three categories of High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration use papers in important journals, normalized citation impact, and the proportion of internationally co-authored papers as indicators, respectively. The ranking applies subject-specific weighting: after standardized scoring, each indicator is weighted and aggregated in accordance with its corresponding weight.
