On November 26th, the First Award Ceremony of “Dong Jiuchang Scholarship” was held in Conference Room No.7, Bona Building. In this ceremony, the CUEBers recalled Dong Jiuchang, the former Vice President of the Beijing Institute of Finance & Trade, for his spirit of “blazing a new trail and making solid progress” and encouraged graduates to scale new heights in science. The donner, Dong Ning, son of Dong Jiuchang, and President Fu Zhifeng gave out awards to graduate students who had received the first “Dong Jiuchang Scholarship”. Zhao Xiling, the Director of the International Liaison Department, Secretary of Alumni Association and Education Foundation hosted the ceremony.

According to Zhou Mingsheng, the Director of Graduate Student Affairs Office, “Dong Jiuchang Scholarship” was founded by Dong Jiuchang Fund, aiming to promote the innovation ability and scientific research of the graduate students in CUEB. The appraisal of Scholarship was held annually in November, so as to judge graduate students who published papers in 9 accredited journals.

After the examination and approval by jury in December, 2019, 4 graduate students, namely, Zhang Shuhui, 2017 PhD student of the School of Public Finance and Taxation, Zhang Cheng, 2017 PhD student in Finance of the School of Economics, Lu Chengxi, graduate student in Regional Economics of the College of Urban Economics and Public Administration and Ma Shanzi, the graduate student in Business Management of the College of Business Administration, who published papers in Economic Research Journal and Management World respectively, won the first “Dong Jiuchang Scholarship”, and were awarded with 10000 RMB. 

In address, Cui Yeguang, the President of the Education Foundation expressed his acknowledgement to Dong Ning and his family for their support to CUEB and love for students and showed that the award for excellent graduate students is one of the channels for Education Foundation to exert their platform strength and help CUEB to cultivate their students. Education Foundation will further gather social strength, set projects, organize activities and help students to form a sound personality, thus to promote the specialty construction and discipline development.

On the ceremony, Jia Meizhen, the Former Secretary of Education Association, former Vice Director of President Office in West-City District represented Zhang Liuhu, former Vice President of Beijing Institute of Finance & Trade and Hu Maotong, former Dean of the College of Urban Economics and Public Administration, delivered a speech. They recalled the life of Dong Jiuchang who had been committed to the development of the education and innovation. Hu Maotong believed that this kind of spirit is the treasure of school culture. Alumni Wang Lei, Legal Representative, Vice President and Executive Director of the Education Foundation, recalled his experience while working with Dong Jiuchang at Beijing College of Economics and praised Dong Jiuchang for his passion to education and exploration for education reform. He said we should learn from him because he is not only an explorer of education reform, but also a practitioner with steady efforts.

The “Dong Jiuchang Fund” was established by Dong Ning with a donation of 1,000,000 yuan in December, 2018. The purpose is to promote the spirit of Dong Jiuchang and advance the development of school personnel training. Dong Ning said that the original purpose of “Dong Jiuchang Fund” is to realize the dream of his father because of his devotion to education and to thank the care and consideration of CUEB and Alumni Association during the illness of his father. Dong Ning mentioned that his father once said that the happiness of a teacher lies in the success of students. So, he hoped that scholarship winners would continue to study hard and serve their alma mater and the country better in the future.

Zhang Cheng and Lu Chenxi, as representatives of scholarship winners, stated in their speeches that they couldn’t have made such success without the school’s cultivation and teacher’s guidance. They thanked teacher Dong Jiuchang and his family for their support. In the future, they will take Prof. Dong Jiuchang as a model to maintain integrated, diligent, dedicated, rigorous and apply what they have learnt to practice and improve their abilities of scientific research.

In his speech, President Fu Zhifeng thanked Dong Jiuchang and Dong Ning for their kind donations and spoke highly of Dong Jiuchang’s decision to promote the selection of Huaxiang site as the new location of the school during his tenure as the former Vice President of the Beijing Institute of Finance & Trade. This decision has laid a foundation for the development of CUEB. Fu introduced the development goals and current situation of CUEB. After the continuous efforts of teachers and students, CUEB has continuously approached the domestic first-class level in discipline and specialty construction and has strived to achieve better appraisal in the fifth round of discipline evaluation and the “Double 10 Thousand Plan”. He encouraged everyone to make unremitting efforts to build CUEB into a first-class university in domestically and internationally renowned university of finance and economics.

Zhao Xiling said at the ceremony that leaders, teachers and students in previous generations uphold the “Camel Spirit” camel is the school badge of CUEB), and CUEB has cultivated 180,000 alumni. All of us made contribution to success of CUEB. The establishment of the “Dong Jiuchang Fund” has enabled the future generations guided by the education predecessors and realized the spiritual inheritance from one generation to another. Under the leadership of the council, the Education Foundation will grow larger and stronger.
