Wang Jun, Deputy Director of the Operation Team of the National Stadium and Division Chief of the Performance Ceremony Branch of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympic Games’ (BOCOG) Opening and Closing Ceremonies Department, was invited to Zhuoyu Lecture Hall at CUEB to give a lecture entitled “Joyful rendezvous upon pure ice and snow” on November 10th. This lecture was co-hosted by the Student Affairs Department, the Youth League Committee of CUEB, the School of Accounting, and the School of Labor Economics. Wang Jinbao, Minister of the Student Affairs Department, Li Xiaoou, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of CUEB, Xu Jiangbo, Party Secretary of the School of Accounting, Tian Yu, Vice Party Secretary of the School of Accounting and more than 300 students attended the lecture which was presided over by Li Xiaoou.
At the beginning of this lecture, Wang Jun expressed his gratitude to CUEB for selecting and sending young students as volunteers for the Winter Olympics, and affirmed the good spirit of volunteers. At the same time, Wang said that as a citizen of Beijing, the world’s first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, it is honorable and meaningful to make contributions to the preparation of the Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
Wang Jun introduced the origin and development of the Olympic Movement. Born of a “Sacred Truce” among ancient Greek city states, the Olympic Games gradually changed from a military training event to a game advocating peace and friendship. Then, Wang elaborated the significance of the Olympic symbol, which represents the unity and friendship of athletes from the five continents gathered under the Olympic flag. He also had a discussion with students about the Olympic motto and Chinese Olympic history and presented a commemorative badge of the Winter Olympics to the students who spoke actively as a token of encouragement.
Wang Jun illustrated the importance of hosting the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to showcase the development of China. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that Beijing 2022 is an event of profound significance to showcase China’s image, promote China’s development and invigorate the Chinese ethos. In the centennial journey of the CPC, the Olympic Games, the most internationally influential sporting event, is also an opportunity to examine and test a country’s capacity.
In the lecture, Wang Jun introduced the vision of the Olympic Movement and the meaning of sports. He said that we should build a better world through sports, uphold the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, respect, and unity, put forward the Olympic spirit and pass on the philosophy of sports serving humanity. At the end of his talk, to inspire students to think about the social meaning of sports, Wang Jun asked three questions about sports: What is sport? What does sport mean in your mind? What is the value of sports?
This event not only enriched CUEBers’ understandings of the Winter Olympics, but also kept sports ethics deeply rooted among students, enhanced their awareness of being strong and keeping fit. It also encouraged students to shoulder the responsibilities of youth in the new era and contribute to boosting China’s sports powerhouse and promoting a sporting spirit.
