On December 7, CUEB Graduate School held the first online training for new graduate supervisors in 2022 to better clarify the responsibility of fostering virtue through education for qualified education. Han Xianzhou, Secretary of the Party Committee, Wang Yonggui, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Vice President, and more than 80 newly selected doctoral and master's supervisors attended. Wang Jun, Minister of the Party Committee Graduate Affairs Department and Dean of the Graduate School, chaired the training.

Secretary of the Party Committee Han Xianzhou gives a keynote speech.

At the meeting, Han introduced the curriculum-based and major-based ideological and political construction. He pointed out that we should keep the overall situation---the national rejuvenation and the profound changes unseen in a century in mind. Also, he encouraged them to arm their minds with Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and to implement and interpret the spirit of the Party’s 20th National Congress. According to General Secretary Xi Jinping's important remarks at the National Education Conference, Han emphasized the fundamental role of the theoretical system of socialist education with Chinese characteristics in the new era and the decisive significance of education for the country and the Party. Therefore, we should adhere to the "Nine Upholds” (namely, upholding the Party’s overall leadership over education, practicing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, putting education first, adhering to socialist education, developing education according to China’s reality, advancing people-centered education, deepening educational reform and innovation, bearing in mind the important mission to serve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and developing teaching staff as the fundamental work). After stating Xi Jinping's important remarks on fostering virtue through education, Han proposed that it should be the fundamental task of education to cultivate young talents who can shoulder the great responsibility of the national rejuvenation. Supported by a host of documents issued by the State Council, we should integrate the basic moral principle, the requirements of socialist core values, and the ideals and responsibilities of achieving national rejuvenation into other courses, forming a synergy that all kinds of courses could go along well with the ideological and political theoretical courses. In addition, we should guide students to correctly grasp the future trend of the world and China, master Chinese characteristics in comparison with the rest world and be aware of the responsibility and the historical mission with ambitions and a down-to-earth approach. In the end, he said that educators should be educated foremost, and we should be active to foster virtue through education within the whole process of teaching, so as to provide better guidance to students.

Wang Yonggui, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Vice President, gives remarks.

Dean of the Graduate School Wang Jun chairs the meeting.

Wang firstly extended warm congratulations to the new supervisors and then briefed the current reform of China’s degree and graduate education reform. He proposed the development direction of graduate education with its fundamental mission of cultivating virtues and morality, and stressed the significance of supervisors’ training for high-quality graduate education. In addition, as high-level graduate education is reliant on high-level supervisors, we should strengthen the responsibility of cultivating virtues and morality as well as persistently improve research competence and innovate the guiding mode for cultivating professionals. In the end, he encouraged them to respect and support students’ self-development in a tailored teaching approach.

Tan Chuanbao, professor from Beijing Normal University, makes a targeted training for graduate supervisors.

With the theme of “Being an educator of happiness”, Tan Chuanbao, who works in the Faculty of Education of BNU and serves as the director of the Center for Citizenship and Moral Education of BNU, delivered a vivid training for the new graduate supervisors. Professor Tan gave full expressions to professional ethics of being a graduate supervisor from three aspects. Firstly, happiness. Arguably, the happiness of education derives from the recognition and accomplishment of the meaning of education itself, while such a kind of happiness is different from the general joy since it can bring value and possess irreplaceable infinity and motivation. Secondly, fairness. That means supervisors are expected to treat students on an equal basis in daily work. In other words, it is important for them to seek truth from facts and be fair in rewards and punishment. On top of that, they also need to follow the principle of teaching students according to their aptitude and take a top-down approach while adopting a holistic perspective. It can be said that an enabling education environment matters most to fairness. In turn, a fair atmosphere can strengthen the prestige of a teacher and make for maintaining the student’s enthusiasm and promoting their morality. Thirdly, kindness. Education should embrace care and love. That is, teachers need to pay attention to students according to their personalities.

Supervisor training has already emerged as an essential part and turned into practical actions in building a contingent of high-quality supervisors as it plays a vital role in improving the overall literacy and guidance competence of supervisors and fostering more excellent graduates. It is informed that this targeted training was the first part of pre-job training for new supervisors in 2022. Going forward, the Graduate School will organize a second training, focusing on the experience of excellent supervisors, illustration of management system, as well as communication of graduate cultivation. Ultimately, it is to ensure the graduate supervisors will fulfill their duties of fostering virtue through education and further improve their competence to cultivate graduates.

Jiang Hong, Zhangjie and Cai Bin, Deputy Dean of the Graduate School, attends the training.
