Attention!!!
Today we will have a briefing session on
the Field Exchange Project with UN European Headquarters (Geneva-Paris)!
Now let’s step into the diplomatic journey!
Pre-departure training: laying a solid foundation
To ensure CUEBers a deep understanding of the project before departure, the organizers conducted a 5-day preparatory program. Mainly led by international organization officials, it covered an in-depth analysis of the UN’s responsibility and institutional framework, of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the parliamentary procedures for Model United Nations (MUN) simulation themed “Green Earth”. Besides, students gained a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of UN’s regulations. They also acquired skills in drafting conference amendments and participated in targeted instruction that provided instruction about academic and English writing. These activities enriched their knowledge base, ensuring that they are well-prepared to embark on their diplomatic journey at their best.
Diving into International Organizations: Insights from Field Visits
The field exchange sessions of the Project are located in Geneva and Paris. In Geneva, teachers and students visited the headquarters of key international institutions, including the United Nations (UN), and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Also, they engaged in expert-led seminars hosted by officials from international organizations such as the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), World Trade Organization (WTO), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Moreover, a “Green Earth” MUN simulation designed by the organizers was followed.
During the UN visit, officers dated back to the historical development of the UN, introducing its key roles in safeguarding world peace and advancing global development. The visit also offered an in-depth explanation of the functions and operational mechanisms of core UN bodies such as the Security Council and the General Assembly. Notably, senior diplomats attended the event in person, offering students attentive and professional guidance.
When visiting WIPO, students explored exhibition halls, viewed physical displays, and learned international intellectual property protection system and its latest policies. Faculty and students also attended a lecture titled “The Future of the United Nations in the Current International Landscape” delivered by a UN official from the Institute for Peace and Diplomacy.
At ILO, students learned about the organizational structure and operational mechanisms of the IFRC. They engaged in in-depth and lively discussions on pressing issues such as transformative technological advancements and safeguarding labor rights in the context of the rapid growth of emerging industries.
During their visit to the WTO, officials discussed the organization’s role in resolving globalization concerns, assisting developing nations in their integration into the global trade system, and dealing with emerging areas such as the digital economy. The students engaged in a detailed conversation with the authorities about the future of international trade, the challenges of the multilateral trading system, and the WTO’s reform trajectory.
By the end of the program, the students engaged in in-depth discussions with their peers who were interning at the UN, thereby gaining deeper insights into the organization’s operations. It is worth noting that the students took part in the Model United Nations General Assembly as “representatives” from various countries. In the face of several global crises, they interacted actively, exchanged ideas, and engaged in lively debates, exhibiting the young generation’s profound thinking and active involvement in global affairs.
Extending Worldwide Views & Starting a Discovery Journey
Amid the tight schedules, students visited CERN, Annecy, the Lausanne Olympic Museum, Lausanne Polytechnic University, and Château de Sion. As the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, CERN’s advanced scientific research equipment and grand and spectacular experimental scenes made students deeply feel humanity’s persistence and unwavering efforts in exploring the microscopic world. The complicated and sophisticated apparatus, as well as the experts’ labor, sparked their strong admiration and desire for science.
At the Lausanne Olympic Museum, students explored the historical development of the Olympic Movement. During their visit to Lausanne Polytechnic University, they were impressed by the lively academic atmosphere and the dynamic exchange of cutting-edge academic ideas on campus.
Though the 10-day visit was brief, it was extremely rewarding, and the students gained valuable insights from this experience. Let’s listen to their feedback.
Jing Shibo, an undergraduate from the College of Urban Economics and Public Administration, Grade 2024
The winter journey to Geneva began on February 8, when we landed in Geneva from Beijing and visited numerous UN international organizations and institutions. During the MUN meeting, I noticed people speaking energetically about different countries and expressing ideas in fluent English, and I knew I need to study harder in the future. I am delighted to have made so many friends on this trip, and I intend to actively participate in such activities in the future to broaden my horizons through practice.
Zhou Yongning, an undergraduate from the School of Economics, Grade 2024
We arrived in Geneva late at night, and despite our exhaustion, our hearts were full of expectation. I learned about the operation of the UN at ILO, watched an FAO official giving a speech about the vision of SDGs, discussed AI and digital copyright at WIPO, and experienced the magnitude of humanitarian aid at the Red Cross. MUN provided me with the opportunity to participate in diplomatic meetings where we made revisions on Thailand’s behalf and discussed world matters in depth. This event connected me to the UN and the world, and it sowed the seeds of my future dedication to international issues. Perhaps one day, I will return to this arena as a diplomat or member of an international organization.
Liu Jingxiang, a Graduate from the Accounting School, Grade 2024
The visit to the UN headquarters in Geneva was an unforgettable international experience. At WIPO, we discussed innovation in intellectual property; at ILO, I learned about global labor rights; and at Palais des Nations, I deeply felt the power of international cooperation. Most importantly, I gained a better understanding of a “global citizen”. After listening to the stories shared by UN officials, I realized that the young are not only the builders of the future but also the practitioners of the present. This journey not only broadened my world outlook, but also strengthened my determination to devote myself to global affairs. In the future, I will fulfill the responsibility of youth with what I have learned.
Zhu Yalin, an undergraduate from the School of Foreign Studies, Grade 2024
I learned a lot from this exchange in Geneva, becoming a participant (in international affairs) rather than merely an observer because I deeply felt the connection between global vision and individual responsibility. While visiting international organizations, I learned that global governance encounters many obstacles in practice, and realized the importance of international cooperation. Through the Model United Nations (MUN), I felt the complexity of international negotiations and the wisdom of cooperation. Thanks to the cultural exploration program, I appreciated the passion for the pursuit of freedom at Château de Chillon and harmony between men and nature in the town of Annecy. This experience has inspired me to be more determined about my goals in the future. I am ready to promote cross-cultural dialogue as a global citizen and contribute my commitment!
Pan Yuhan, an undergraduate from the School of Labor Economics, Grade 2021
I am very excited about this journey to the UN Office in Geneva. Stepping into the UN building, a solemn atmosphere enveloped me, with artworks and national flags showcasing the blend of diverse cultures. Greater thinkers and intellectuals coming from all corners of the globe have jointly discussed international issues, which greatly broadened my horizons. Not only did I gain knowledge, but I also experienced the breathtaking scenery and cultural charm of Switzerland. The ancient architecture and serene lakes removed my pressure, empowering me with a sense of relaxation. This trip to Switzerland will become a valuable experience in my life and encourage me to contribute to the world’s development in the future.
