CUEB Team Wins the Third Prize in the 12th China WTO Moot Court Competition and the Third Prize of Memorial Team of Defense Counsel

On the afternoon of December 17, the final of the 12th China WTO Moot Court Competition (hereafter the Competition) ended at Southwest University of Political Science & Law. A total of 49 university teams across the country participated in the competition. After a fierce competition, the CUEB team won the Third Prize in the Competition and the Third Prize of Memorial Team of Defense Counsel.

The CUEB team, consisting of 7 students from the School of Law including master students Zhang Meng, Zhao Shuyu, Zhai Wenjing, and undergraduates Long Jianyang, Zheng YiYi, Jia Wenyi and Liu Dongjian. They were instructed by Hao Di and Zhang Jinjin, teachers from the Teaching and Research Office of International Law. Over the past more than two months, the team members had been training every Thursday evening. Under the guidance of the teachers, the team members made good use of their spare time to collect and read a lot of cases. Finally, they wrote the petition in English for appeal and defense. The two teachers also organized team members to simulate online oral arguments, so that they could better understand the rules of the online competition and accumulate oral English expressions and response skills.


After the competition, the team members expressed their pleasure to win the honor for school. The competition not only improved the professional competence in the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism and the use of relevant rules, but also enhanced teamwork spirit.


The Competition was jointly initiated by Southwest University of Political Science & Law, China University of Political Science and Law, WTO Law Research Society of China Law Society, and the Office of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China. It aimed at helping university students to better master WTO rules and facilitating the cultivation of pesonnels skilled at WTO negotiation and dispute settlement.


In recent years, as China doubles efforts to cultivate personnels skilled at the rule of law in matters involving foreign parties, the School of Law of CUEB has taken English competition as an effective means to develop students’ professional skills in interpreting the international rules, and guiding them to solve problems from China’s position. By doing so, students will be competent and ready to devote themselves to the building of the rule of law in matters involving foreign parties, and to safeguard the interests of the country and the people.
