On November 19, the 7th session of the Beijing Digital Economy at CUEB was held in the Academic Report Hall. Ma Zhiming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a renowned expert in probability theory and stochastic analysis, delivered the keynote speech. Wu Weixing, Deputy Party Secretary and President of CUEB, also attended the lecture.

With the topic “A Brief Discussion on New Scientific Research Paradigms and Artificial Intelligence”, Ma started with a comparison between the old and new scientific research paradigms, systematically elaborating on the evolutionary context of scientific research models. He focused on the promoting role of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research and its new challenges to probability statistics. He noted that while AI has significantly improved data processing efficiency, it also puts forward higher requirements for building a more interpretable probability and statistics system. Ma emphasized that AI still has limitations in terms of “understanding” and “creativity”, and all its achievements are built on the algorithms, data and goals provided by humans. The lecture also showcased the relevant research achievements made by his research team in the field of AI.

The lecture was hosted by Li Ping, Administrative Deputy President (Division Director Level) of the Institute of Beijing Digital Economy Research. In concluding remarks, Li stated that Academician Ma’s insightful sharing would guide teachers and students in leveraging AI tools to empower scientific research.

Nearly 300 teachers and students of CUEB attended the lecture.
