CUEB Secures ESI Global Top 1% in 3 Disciplines, Ranked 6th Among Finance & Economics Universities in China
According to the latest data from Clarivate Analytics, CUEB has achieved global top 1% status in three ESI (Essential Science Indicators) disciplines: Economics & Business, Engineering, and General Social Sciences.
Among them, CUEB’s core discipline of Economics & Business ranks 30th nationally, and tops the list among universities outside the Double First-Class Initiative (First-Class university and First-Class Discipline), a national higher education excellence program, and 6th among universities specialized in Finance and Economics, with its highly-cited papers count ranking 7th nationally. These achievements underscore its significant progress in academic influence and research innovation, and lay a solid foundation for “breakthrough project” in enhancing discipline quality.
Ranking of Economics & Business Discipline
The global ranking of the Economics & Business discipline reflects a university’s comprehensive strength in economics and management. Since its 5th Party Congress, CUEB has prioritized discipline development, holding a conference on discipline construction and scientific research to clarify development goals and key tasks.
CUEB, actively involved in the development of original textbooks, has contributed to the Handbook of Chinese Economy, promoting an independent Chinese economic intellectual system. Aligned with major national strategy and capital development in the new era, it focuses on key areas like carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, ESG, digital economy, fintech, and digital labor. It supports the construction of “Four Centers” (national political center, cultural center, international exchanges center and technological innovation center), the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and the governance of megacities. By integrating both internal and external resources, it has achieved a series of high-level research and high-contribution social service outcomes.
The rising global ranking of its Economics & Business discipline signifies the growing influence of CUEB’s economics and management as well as deep engagement in national strategies and responsiveness to Beijing’s needs for socio-economic development.
What is ESI?
Developed by Clarivate Analytics, Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is an analytical database built upon academic literature and cited references from the Web of Science.
Covering 22 disciplines, ESI analyzes SCI- and SSCI-indexed papers and their citation metrics globally over a decade. Only disciplines in the top 1% by citation count are included in the ESI rankings, which are updated every two months.
The ESI database uses six key indicators—paper count, total citations, citations per paper, highly cited papers, and frontier papers—to access research standards, institutional academic reputations, scientists’ influence, and journal quality. It is now a leading global tool for evaluating the academic standing and influence of universities and institutions.
