On April 7, School of Culture and Communication (SCC) held CUEB “Teacher Remarks about Hump Spirit” and a symposium on ideological and political course construction to implement CUEB’s reform requirement of “complete education for overall students in all respects” and to promote ideological and political major and course. Party Secretary Han Xianzhou attended this activity and had in-depth communication with teachers present. Leaders, deans, secretaries of the teachers’ Party branch as well as young and middle-aged teachers of SCC attended the symposium. Feng Bo, general Party Secretary of SCC, presided over the activity.

In exchanges with teachers present, Han Xianzhou noted that as ideological and political courses are necessary requirements of education, faculty members need to equip classes with ideology and politics on the basis of technique, idea and mechanism to promote integrated development in both major and course. He expected teachers’ Party branch, a platform that can effectively help foster character and civic virtue through education, to vitalize itself and enhance the appeal of its activity. Han also pointed out that creative education of ideology and politics is a key to higher teaching quality and it is every teacher’s duty to participate in the project. Teachers should keep exploring to form individual teaching styles, and take a comprehensive analysis of courses and domain knowledge, so as to improve teaching capabilities.  Ultimately, Han conveyed a hope for SCC to develop a way of launching and implementing professional ideology and politics.

At the symposium, Shi Gang, Director of the SCC, introduced the progress of curriculum ideological and political construction in this school. He expressed that SCC, as a pilot school of this project, will unify ideology of definite recognition and carefully organize the work with high attention. Teachers who are party members should lead the SCC faculty in ideology teaching in all courses and demonstration of key ones. Through demo courses observation and emulation in groups and online and offline discussion, teachers should also form individual styles connected with respective majors so as to bring effective results.

Later, three Party branches of teachers including United Party branch of Advertising and Art Teaching and Research Department, Party branch of Communication Department and Party branch of Chinese Language and Literature Department jointly discussed the way of integrating ideological and political elements into specialized course teaching. Party Secretary of Communication Department Xu Yiying presided over the seminar, and teachers of the three departments were also present. Xu Minyu, Liu Junsheng and Liu Nian of Advertising Department, He Xinying, Li Xianzhi and Wang Yaqian of Communication Department, and Dai Xinyue of Chinese Language and Literature Department shared their teaching experience. Focusing on teaching content and methods, course practices and example-setting, they talked about their own understanding of ideological and political education and their ways of integrating these elements into classes while following educational law and students’ growth to achieve practices with “clear-cut stand, diversified patterns, latest concepts and intangible influence”.

Li Peitao, teacher of Chinese Language and Literature Department, and Wang Duan, teacher of Advertising Department, demonstrated College Chinese course and H5 Mobile Marketing Design course respectively by means of illustrating their practices of reconciling political identification, national consciousness, cultural confidence, character cultivation and other ideological and political elements with specialized knowledge and professional skills.

It is learned that this symposium is a significant step towards implementing four documents including Opinions on Developing Comprehensive Reform of “Complete Education for Overall Students in All Respects” and Opinions on Building In-depth Ideological and Political Courses issued by CUEB. On this basis, SCC will continue to carry out the comprehensive reform by developing ideological and political courses, so as to improve talents quality and ability, strengthen the effect of fostering character and civic virtue and then achieve high-quality substance development of SCC.
